Calling all ‘green-minded’ people – Suffolk Master Composters need YOU!
A group of enthusiastic community volunteers will be given the chance to be trained as Suffolk Master Composters, to help promote the many benefits of home composting. The volunteers will act as 'composting ambassadors' - encouraging the public to compost through promotional talks and demonstrations and by helping existing composters to get the best out of their compost bins.
The two day Master Composter Foundation Course, which will be held at Lackford Lakes Nature Reserve on Fri 25th & Sat 26th May, is free to volunteers. Composting resources, out of pocket expenses and ongoing support will also be provided throughout the volunteers’ involvement with the scheme. In return volunteers are asked to commit to at least 30 hours to the scheme - promoting the composting message through a wide range of methods. Existing Master Composters have contributed through a wide range of activities such as holding displays at local community events, visiting environmental clubs at local schools, ‘troubleshooting’ visits to struggling home composters, writing articles in Parish publications through to helping an allotment establish a communal composting facility. More details on the role of a Master Composter Volunteer and the training course content can be found here - http://www.greensuffolk.org/recycling/what-more-can-i-do/composting/master-composters/
Master Composter, David Wright from Tuddenham, is one of 50 volunteers who have completed their training since the scheme began in November 2007. David said, "The course was not only instructive but was carried out by dedicated enthusiasts who made the content 'fun to learn'. It is very rewarding to talk to the public about waste reduction, recycling and home composting in particular. So many people are very receptive and glad of the advice – in particular children who are usually very enthusiastic about green issues. It has also been a joy to meet and volunteer with a great group of like-minded people".
Places are still available for the FREE 2 day training course on 25th & 26th May at Lackford Lakes Nature Reserve - lunch, refreshments and travelling expenses will all be provided for trainees. For more information and to book your place on the course please contact Craig Renton, Master Composter Co-ordinator on 01473 264795 by Friday May 18th latest.
The 2 day foundation training course is delivered by experts at Garden Organic, in conjunction with Suffolk County Council on behalf of Suffolk Waste Partnership.
