Community Games Funding
Community Games provide a wonderful and unique opportunity for communities from all backgrounds right across the country to come together and celebrate the 2012 Games and enable thousands of people to experience and create their own Olympic or Paralympic moment.
It’s up to you to organise your Games in a way that works for you and celebrates the uniqueness of your community. This is from where you hold your event, to the activity that might take place, such as in a park or inside a community centre, to the type of activities to run.
Some communities may focus on contests to give the event a competitive element, others may want to focus on giving people the opportunity to try something new, from archery to climbing. Whatever the focus of your Community Games, you should provide an opportunity for everyone in your community to participate.
In Suffolk we have a grant available for up to £500 for you to run your Community Games and we only ask that you run your event by the end of September 2012 and involve as many people in your community as possible and involve existing and new volunteers to your programme. The bigger and better the event, will determine the amount of grant awarded.
Funding Criteria
• Events must combine activities of a sporting and/or cultural nature, be cross generational, accessible
to all and take place in Suffolk by 30th September 2012.
• Any community group, community/sporting club or association, Parish or Town Council, based in
Suffolk can apply.
• Aim to bring the community together for a celebration and the event must be free for people to attend.
• Agree to be monitored for feedback via discussion, short report and case study.
• Consideration will be given to all ideas and the panel’s decision is final.
• You must register for Community Games
• For further information, ideas and event packs and registration, please visit: www.communitygames.org.uk

Natural England Opens £2 Million Paths for Communities Scheme
The Paths for Communities scheme has been established to develop and enhance the network of Public Rights of Way (PROW) in England in order to deliver benefits to rural areas. The aim of the scheme is to:
- encourage and enable local communities to work with land owners to develop and enhance local public paths in ways that deliver wider benefit; and
- offer a network with more appeal to visitors and tourists, contributing to the rural economy through better support for local services such as shops, pubs, hotels, bed and breakfasts, equestrian and cycle businesses.
Natural England anticipates funding of £1 million in both the 2012/13 and 2013/14 financial years. £500,000 will be available in 2012 and £1.5 million in 2013. There will be a wide distribution of awards ranging from £5,000 up to a maximum of £150,000. Grants will normally be limited to 75% of actual costs, with encouragement to seek match funding. However, the scheme may fund up to 100% of actual costs.
A range of practical solutions may be funded; such as:
- Surfacing (as this is a predominantly rural scheme the presumption is that hard surfacing will be minimal).
- Pedestrian and mobility access gates.
- Bridle and horse access gates (including those with hydraulic closing mechanisms).
- Kissing gates/field gates.
- Horse stiles and heavy-duty horse friendly vehicle barriers.
- Timber signposts and waymarkers.
- Leaflets.
- Development of Action Plans for more complex schemes.
- Expenses of staff consultants essential to the development of a project.
The scheme is open to applications from partnerships between local community organisations and landowners/managers in England. Eligible businesses include shops, pubs, hotels, bed and breakfasts, equestrian suppliers and cycle companies.
